DVR vs NVR: Which One Should You Put in Your Client's Building?
The camera decision usually gets all the attention, but the recorder is what determines the shape of the whole system — the wiring, the install labor, the expansion path, and a good chunk of the cost. Getting the DVR/NVR call right up front saves a lot of rework later.
The actual difference
A DVR (Digital Video Recorder) takes analog video over coaxial cable via BNC connections and digitizes it inside the recorder. The camera sends a raw analog signal; the DVR does the processing.
An NVR (Network Video Recorder) takes digital video over Ethernet from IP cameras. The camera does its own processing and encoding, and sends a finished digital stream over the network. The NVR mostly stores and manages it.
That single architectural difference drives everything else.
Where the DVR wins
Existing coax. This is the big one. Many existing commercial security systems already have coaxial cabling in place. If the building has it, a DVR lets you use it. HD-over-coax formats — TVI, AHD, CVI — carry high-definition video over the same cable that used to carry standard definition. No new cable pulls, no drilling, no ceiling work, and no rewire line item the client will balk at.
Cost per channel. DVR systems and HD-over-coax cameras are generally less expensive per channel than comparable IP systems. On a 16-camera job, that difference compounds.
The cameras stay off the network. With a DVR, each analog camera runs on coax and doesn't sit on the client's data network. That means no IP address conflicts, no bandwidth contention with their business systems, no camera dropping offline because someone reconfigured the router. (An internet or LAN connection is still needed on the recorder itself for remote viewing, alerts, and time sync — but the cameras themselves aren't network devices.) For clients without in-house IT, this is a real advantage.
Simpler service calls. Fewer moving parts and no network troubleshooting. When something goes wrong, the failure is usually mechanical and findable rather than a configuration issue buried three layers deep.
Where the NVR wins
Single-cable installs. PoE means one Ethernet cable per camera for both power and data. On new construction with nothing in the walls, this is faster to install and cleaner to manage than pulling separate coax and power.
Onboard analytics. IP cameras generally offer stronger camera-side analytics — motion zones, line crossing, object classification — because the processing happens in the camera itself.
Expansion flexibility. IP systems can be flexible to expand — provided the NVR has available channel capacity, network bandwidth, PoE budget, and storage headroom. Those four constraints are real, and they're the reason "just add another camera" isn't always as simple as it sounds.
Higher maximum resolutions. At the top end of the resolution range, IP still leads.
The hybrid answer
Hybrid recorders accept both BNC analog inputs and IP camera inputs on the same unit. This is often the correct answer on real jobs, and it's underused.
The scenario it solves: a building with existing coax and working analog cameras, where the client wants to add coverage to a new area. You keep the existing cameras on the coax that's already there, run Ethernet only to the new positions, and both feed the same recorder. No rewire of the existing system, no second recorder, one interface.

The three questions that decide it
1. Is there existing coax in good condition?
If yes, a DVR or hybrid is almost always the faster, cheaper path. Don't sell a rewire the building doesn't need.
2. Does the client have IT staff and a network that can absorb camera traffic?
If no, a DVR keeps the camera side of the system independent of their network entirely.
3. Is this new construction with nothing in the walls?
If yes, you're not saving anything by choosing coax — evaluate IP/PoE on its merits.
Bottom line
Existing coax points to a DVR. No existing infrastructure plus strong analytics requirements points to an NVR. A building that's part legacy and part new construction points to a hybrid — and that's more jobs than most installers assume. Let the building decide, not the brochure.
